HISTORY OF SALEM HOSPITAL

Salem Hospital, located in Salem, Oregon, is a regional medical center operated by Salem Health Hospitals & Clinics, a not-for-profit, tax-exempt health care system. The hospital is the top private-sector employer in the city, licensed for 494 acute-care beds, with approximately 4,700 employees. It offers a wide variety of health care services to the community, as exemplified by these 2017 statistics:

  • Births: 3,461

  • Diagnostic imaging procedures: 189,410

  • Emergency department visits: 109,131

  • Laboratory procedures: 1,627,600

  • Patient meals and meal equivalents served: 996,224

  • Surgeries: 14,158

In addition to receiving its first Magnet® designation in 2010 and redesignation in 2015, Salem Hospital has received numerous awards and recognitions across many specialties, including:

  • IBM Watson Health 50 Top Cardiovascular HospitalsTM designated the hospital as one of the highest-performing cardiovascular hospitals nationally for 2019.

  • For 2018–2019, the hospital received the highest rating possible from U.S. News & World Report in the specialties of pulmonology, urology, diabetes and endocrinology, as well as the following six procedures and conditions:

  1. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

  2. Colon cancer surgery

  3. Heart bypass surgery

  4. Heart failure

  5. Hip replacement

  6. Knee replacement

  • In 2018, the hospital’s intermediate care unit earned the Gold Beacon Award for Excellence, the top award given by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses.

  • For 2017–2022, the hospital received international recognition as a Baby-Friendly designated birth facility.

  • The Salem Hospital Rehabilitation Center (Building M on the hospital campus) opened in 2016.

  • Remodeling of the hospital’s Building B is currently underway.

 

DEMOGRAPHICS OF THE POPULATIONS SERVED

Salem, the capital of Oregon, is a city of 169,798 people (2017) situated in the Mid-Willamette Valley in Marion County. The hospital’s primary service area covers two counties, Marion and Polk.

 

Secondary service areas include Lincoln City, McMinnville, Newberg, Woodburn, Silverton, Stayton, Albany, Monmouth and Dallas—in Yamhill, Lincoln, Linn and Benton counties.
